University library short on wireless Internet service

IT experts deploy new wireless system to great satisfaction of students

A university library found itself in a tough situation -- students who had grown up with leading-edge computers, email, Web sites, iPods, and social networks found themselves in an environment that was seriously lagging behind in wireless technology. Only a small section of the 220,000-square-foot building offered wireless Internet service, and many of the existing access points were dead, leaving “spotty” coverage at best. This wasn’t a major issue until laptop usage spiked and became a necessity rather than a luxury for students.

To solve the problem, the library turned to Innovative Vision Technologies (IVT) to find the best solution. IVT's Network Engineering team designed and installed the new 802.11G wireless solution from Cisco. With 27 access points (APs), the system covers the entire 220,000-square-foot building. It also uses a wireless controller that can "sense" a failure from an access point and automatically adjust the strength of the other AP's to cover the loss.

The result: The new wireless system is almost five times faster than the old one, and wireless usage has soared in the library since the deployment. Students are using areas of the library that were not being used before. Wireless is so popular, that the library may have to increase its bandwidth to meet the demand.
